L’ancien président Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a été élu dimanche 30 octobre à la tête du Brésil avec 50,90 %, selon les résultats définitifs, contre 49,10 % pour le chef d’État sortant d’extrême droite Jair Bolsonaro. La figure de gauche commencera son troisième mandat le 1er janvier.
Le Tribunal supérieur électoral (TSE) a déclaré dimanche soir le candidat de gauche Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva élu président de la République, jugeant l’écart étant impossible à rattraper après le dépouillement de 98,95 % des voix. Avec environ 49,10 % des voix, le candidat d’extrême droite Jair Bolsonaro devient le premier président sortant du pays à échouer à se faire réélire.
L’écart entre les deux opposants est très court, dans un pays de 215 millions d’habitants et près de 156 millions d’électeurs, obligés de s’exprimer, le vote étant obligatoire. La marge est bien plus étroite que ce que prédisaient les sondages, qui avaient déjà sous-estimé le score de Jair Bolsonaro avant le premier tour.
L’ex-sidérurgiste de 77 ans, qui avait connu la prison pour corruption (2018-2019) avant de voir ses condamnations annulées par la justice, effectue un spectaculaire retour au sommet de l’État au terme d’une campagne délétère qui a divisé le pays. Il avait déjà été à la tête du pays pour deux mandats, de 2003 à 2011.
Lula avait atteint une popularité record à l’issue de ses deux premiers mandats, mais avait ensuite connu la disgrâce, passant par la case prison, après des condamnations pour corruption finalement annulées pour vice de forme.
